WWII Historic Sites

A few years ago we visited the major WWII historic sites in Normandy, France. The trip was so interesting that the following year we returned to tour the WWI sites in Belgium and northern France.
We’d booked a private tour, and when our guide heard I was from Newfoundland he suggested we visit the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial which is dedicated to the Newfoundland Regiment that was wiped out on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having grown up in St. John’s, Newfoundland, I was familiar with our bronze caribou memorial, emblem of the regiment, standing in Bowring Park. At Beaumont-Hamel, the monument’s counterpart overlooks the perfectly preserved battlefield, trenches, and cemeteries. Seeing the sibling of our NFLD statue there in France was unforgettable.

Six bronze caribou in Newfoundland, France, and Belgium are among my favourite things.
